１日４時間働けば・・・

If the ordinary wage-earner worked four hours a day, there would be enough^*1 for everybody, and no unemployment - assuming^*2 a certain very moderate amount of sensible^*3 organization. This idea shocks the well-to-do,^*4 because they are convinced^*5 that the poor would not know how to use so much leisure.
In America, men often work long hours even when they are already well off;^*6 such men, naturally, are indignant at^*7 the idea of leisure for wage-earners, except as the grim punishment of unemployment;^*8 in fact, they dislike leisure even for their sons. Oddly enough,^*9 while they wish their sons to work so hard as to have no time to be civilized,^*10 they do not mind^*11 their wives and daughters having no work at all. The snobbish^*12 admiration of uselessness, which, in an aristocratic^*13 society, extends to both sexes, is, under a plutocracy,^*14 confined to women;^*15 this, however, does not make it^*16 any more^*17 in agreement with common sense.

【語句】
*1 enough すなわち, enough to eat and clothe oneself with という気持。
*2 assuming「仮定して」
*3 sensible「賢明な」「合理的な」
*4 well-to-do = fairly rich, financially prosperous. ここで the がついていることに注意。
*5 are convinced「確信している」　これは受身に訳さない。
*6 well off = fairly rich.
*7 indignant at 「～に腹を立てる」
*8 except as the grim punishment of unemployment「失業という無情な罰として以外は」　職がなければいやでも遊んでいなくてはならない。これはとがめるわけには行かない。
*9 oddly enough「ずいぶん妙なことだが」
*10 be civilized「文化的になる」「教養を身につける」
*11 mind = object to, dislike, be troubled by.
*12 snobbish「紳士気どりの」
*13 aristocratic「貴族の」 aristocracy「貴族政治」「上流階級」
*14 under a plutocracy「富豪政治のもとで」「金権の支配下で」
*15 be confined to「～に限られる」
*16 does not make it の it は「この事柄」「この問題」で,the matter in mind である。
*17 any more とは前の貴族社会の場合以上に,の気持。

【構文】
最初の文は仮想を述べたもの。the poor would not know…_の would は,「そういうことになった時」の含み。so hard as to have ... は節にすれば so hard that they have .... となる。tbeir wives and daughters having ... の having は既出の通り, Gerund にも Participle にも考えられる。The snobbish admiration ... の節は挿入節と句が多いが本筋は admiration is confined to women である。

【邦訳】

　もし普通の賃銀労働者が一日４時間働けば,すべての人に足るだけのものがあり,失業はなくなる。ただし,極めて僅かの,ある種の合理的な組織化を行えばである。こういう考えは裕福な人々に衝撃を与える,なぜならば,彼等は貧乏人にはそんなにたくさんの余暇の使い方は解るまいと思いこんでいるからである。アメリカでは,既に経済的にゆとりがあっても,男子は長い時間働くことがしばしばある。このような人々は,自然に,賃銀労働者に余暇があるなんてことは考えても憤慨する。もちろん,失業という無情な罰としての余暇は別であるが。実際,彼等は自分の息子たちの閑暇さえ気に入らない。まことに妙だが,彼等は息子たちには文化を身につける時間さえないほど勤労することを求めながら,妻や娘たちが全然仕事をもっていないことは一向に気にしない。無為無用を紳士気どりで賛美することは貴族社会では男性にも女性にも普及しているものであるが,金権政治のもとでは,女性にだけ限られている。しかし考えて見れば,これもまた一向に常識に合うことではない。
