The influence of fathers in the present day is much less than it used to be. This is owing partly to schools and partly to the fact that men are busier than they were in former times. It has happened repeatedly in history that a man who had achieved a certain eminence in his line brought up his son to follow in his footsteps and was far surpassed by his son. Nowadays, distinguished men often have no sons, and when they have, their sons hate them, because, whatever the young men go, people say 'Oh, are you the son of the distinguished so-and-so?' with the result that personality seems lost in filial attributes. The one desire of the son, therefore, is not to follow in his father's footsteps but to be as different from his father as possible.
In ancient times, this sort of thing did not happen. I doubt if anyone ever said to Alexander the Great, 'Oh, are you the son of the distinguished King Philip?' Certainly if anyone ever did, Alexander must have killed him on the spot. The influence of the father in this case is psychologically interesting because emulation was combined with hatred. While Philip lived, Alexander feared that his father's victories would leave nothing for him to conquer. When Alexander was twenty, King Philip was assassinated, probably with the connivance of Alexander's mother, whom Alexander loved dearly. When he died at the age of thiry-two, he had conquered all Asia up to and including the Punjab, which left him in no doubt of having eclipsed his father's fame. Aristotle at intervals wrote him professorial letters saying 'Oh fie!' and telling him it was vulgar to take so much interest in barbarians, but Alexander only replied by sending him specimens of the flora of the Indus Valley, together with some elementary geographical information.
Many other distinguished careers have been inspired by paternal influence: Hannibal, Frederick the Great, Mozart, and John Stuart Mill may serve as examples. Love of the father is by no means necessary; what is necessary is technical instruction from an early age, direction of attention into a narrow channel, and ambition to achieve distinction which, with such an education, must be of the same kind as the father's.
The modern world scarcely affords opportunities for an education of this sort. Partly for this reason, distinguished men of the old type are growing very rare. To achieve the highest degree of distinction requires, no doubt, considerable native ability, but it requires much more than this. It requires some overmastering and rather simple passion, such as the desire to conquer the world or to avenge the wrongs of Carthage. It requires absortion from an early age in matters relevant to one kind of career. A father's infuluence may easily lead to these results, given the right sort of disposition in the son. In Napoleon's case, the necessary narrowness was secured by sending him to the military academy at Brienne, with the result that his whole subsequent education was concerned with war. It is not by an all-round education or by catholicity of interests that first-rate eminence is achieved: it is achieved by concentration and a certain narrowness both emotional and intellectual. In a world where all young people have the same environment, and the same standards presented for their acceptance, this does not easily happen. Diversity is necessary to distinction, and uniformity in education tends to produce mediocrity in adult life. We must therefore expect that individual eminence will be rarer in the future than it has been in the past.
