精神の快楽は肉体の快楽よりも優れたものと考えられ，異教徒や異端者に対し来世（あの世）で加えられる永遠の責め苦を冥想することは精神の快楽のうちで高い位置を与えられた。禁欲主義が，感覚的なもの以外の快楽は無害だととしたのは，禁欲主義の欠点の一つであり，実際のところ，最善の快楽ばかりではなくまさに最悪の快楽もまた，純粋に精神的なもの（肉体的な要素がまったくないもの）なのである。
The pleasures of the mind were considered to be superior to those of the body, and a high place among the pleasures of the mind was assigned to the contemplation of the eternal tortures to which the pagans and heretics would hereafter be subjected. It is one of the drawbacks to asceticism that it sees no harm in pleasures other than those of sense, and yet, in fact, not only the best pleasures, but also the very worst, are purely mental.
