興奮した時代においては，政治家は，推論する力（理性）も，客観的な（非個人的な）事実を把握する力も，知恵も，まったく必要としない。そのような時代の政治家が持っていなければならないものは，彼ら（大衆）が望んでいるものは必ず獲得することができることを,またそれを達成できるのは政治家の自分であると大衆に信じ込ませる能力である。
In excited times, a politician needs no power of reasoning, no apprehension of impersonal facts, and no shred of wisdom. What he must have is the capacity of persuading the multitude that what they passionately desire is attainable, and that he, through his ruthless determination, is the man to attain it.

現代は「興奮した時代」か？ オリンピック、新型コロナウィルス、その他、興奮させる要素が多いので、「興奮した時代だ」と言えそう。「推論する力（理性）も，客観的な（非個人的な）事実を把握する力も，知恵も，まったく必要としない」ので、トランプや安倍総理などでも、そこそこの岩盤支持者がいるので「やっていられる」。
