The oil of the United States belongs to certain companies because they have a legal title to it, and the armed forces of the United States are prepared to enforce the law; the Indians, to whom the oil regions originally belonged, have no legal title, because they were defeated in war.

No land on Earth was originally the property of any particular individual or group. In ancient times, when the population was small and land was plentiful relative to the number of people, there was little need to risk one's life in war to acquire territory. However, as the population increased, competition intensified over more fertile and livable lands, and eventually, some began to seize them by force.
In this way, the most powerful individuals in each region came to dominate others, establishing themselves as tribal leaders or rulers of emerging states. Land that had originally been taken by violence was later legitimized through myths and religious justifications, being reframed as a "divine right," which served to reinforce the legitimacy of their rule.
