Bertrand Russell Quotes

In the modern world there are two philosophies: the one, which stems from Rousseau, and sweeps aside discipline as unnecessary; the other, which finds its fullest expression in totalitarianism, which thinks of discipline as essentially imposed from without. Conrad adhered to the older tradition, that discipline should come from within. He despised indiscipline, and hated discipline that was merely external. In all this I found myself closely in agreement with him.

* a brief comment:
Everyone wants to act as freely as possible. However, everyone understands that unlimited freedom cannot be allowed because we must respect not only our own freedom but also that of others.
In a democratic society, it is common sense to recognize each other's freedom. However, in modern America, or if that sounds too harsh, in America since Trump became president, about 30% of Americans seem not to think this way. The most representative figure of this mindset is Trump himself. He appears to believe that "might is right" and that, as the most powerful person on earth, he can bring about world peace, stability, and prosperity by wielding his power.
Some commentators, in a way defending Trump's outrageous behavior, argue that he is merely engaging in "deals." However, even such individuals would likely change their stance if they suffered actual harm from his actions.
