Bertrand Russell Quotes

Bertrand Russell Quotes 366

The first days of the War were to me utterly amazing. My best friends, such as the Whiteheads, were savagely warlike. ... The prospect filled me with horror, but what filled me with even more horror was the fact that the anticipation of carnage was delightful to something like ninety per cent of the population. ... I became filled with despairing tenderness towards the young men who were to be slaughtered, and with rage against all the statesmen of Europe.

* a brief comment
 If a world war breaks out, many non-permanent neutral countries will be drawn into the war. Thus, sanity is lost and the front lines expand. It is only after many sacrifices have been made that people start to think that the war (the outbreak of war) should have been avoided. Unfortunately, the very people who say ‘we should learn from past wars’ somehow become supporters of war or actively involved in it.
 History repeats these things.
