In the modern world, the great majority of fathers are too hard-worked to see much of their own children. ... One hears stories of children who only know of their father as "that man who comes for the week-end"... It is true that the father often has a strong affection for his children in spite of the small amount of time that he can spend with them. On any sunday, in any of the poorer quarters of London, large numbers of fathers may be seen with their young children, evidently rejoicing in the brief opportunity of getting to know them. But whatever may be the case from the father's point of view, from that of the child this is a play relation, without serious importance.
