Trinity College had invited me to a five year lectureship and I had accepted the invitation. It carried with it a fellowship and a right to rooms in College. ... Cambridge was incredibly full, and at first the best that I could achieve was squalid rooms in a lodging house. There they were underfed and miserable, while I was living luxuriously in College. As soon as it became clear that I was going to get money out of my lawsuit against Barnes, I bought a house at Cambridge, where we lived for some time.
