'... Do you still feel that married people can live happily together and raise stable children in the manner you prescribed in 1929 (in the Bantam Books edition of Marriage and Morals).... Or is it possible that your ideas have changed somewhat during the past thirty years?... my wife believes in your philosophy and would like our marriage to continue on that basis.... I disagree on this point of a happy marriage with both parties having extra-marital sexual relations.

Dear Sir, (June 10, 1959),
I have not at present any decided opinioin. ... At the same time, where a strong affection survives between husband and wife, I think it should be possible for the marriage to remain valuable in spite of fidelity. Individuals differ enormously in the degree to which jealousy makes good relations impossibe, and for this reason, I do not think that one can make general rules. ... I think, however, that when the husband or the wife feels a very deep and very overwhelming love for another person, there may be so much harm in resisting it as to outweigh any possible good.
