When I say that an act is 'good' if it increases human happiness, I do not imply a general standard for human happi ness. I mean to say that 'good' ought to be understood by people as the pursuit of human happiness; as for what constitutes that happiness, that is a matter for continued social debate. We will be wrong and circumstances will alter what is required for human happiness. Nonetheless, the pursuit of it, as we each conceive it to be, is the proper ethical task. ...
