A month later, as we returned from an afteroon's drive in North Wales, we found a pleasant, though much embarrassed, Police Sergeant astride his motorcycle at our front door: He delivered summonses to my wife and me to be at Bow Street on September 12th to be charged with inciting the public to civil disobedience.... I had no wish to become a martyr to the cause, but I felt that I should make the most of any chance to publicise our views. We were not so innocent as to fail to see that our imprisonment would cause a certain stir.
