What led me to write about ethics was the accusation frequently brought against me that, while I had made a more or less sceptical inquiry into other branches of knowledge, I had avoided the subject of ethics except in an early essay expounding Moore's Principia Ethica. My reply is that ethics is not a branch of knowledge. ...The conclusion that I reach is that ethics is never an independent constituent, but is reducible to politics in the last analysis. ...For such reasons, I had come to agree with Santayana that there is no such thing as ethical knowledge. Nevertheless, ethical concepts have been of enormous importance in history, and I could not but feel that a survey of human affairs which omits ethics is inadequate and partial.
