Our Age, like that after the fall of the Western Empire, is one of 
cultural disruption. Russian Communism, like the religion of the 
Prophet, is a new militant faith, which has conquered large areas that

　他人の悩みや苦しみに対する楽観主義
　とりわけ苛立たしいのは、当事者としてその悩みや苦しみを分かち合う必要の
ない人々が、私たち自身の悩みや苦しみについて示す楽観主義である。他人の悩
みや苦しみについて楽観的であることは、それを消し去る、あるいは軽減するた
めのかなり具体的な提案を伴わないかぎり、きわめて危険である。

  Optimism about other people's troubles
Especially irritating is the optimism about our own troubles which is 
displayed by those who do not have to share them. Optimism about other 
people's troubles is a very risky business unless it goes with quite 
concrete proposals as to how to make the troubles disappear or grow less.

　私たちは日常生活のなかで、つねに選択をしているように感じています。
　たとえばレストランに入って、
「今日はハンバーグ定食にしようか、それとも焼肉定食にしようか」と迷い、
　最終的にどちらかを選びます。この「選んでいる」という感覚は、私たちに
　とってあまりにも自然です。しかし、この感覚は本当に世界のあり方を反

　編集後記　オートファジーとタンパク質"ルビコン"除去
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

TBS CROSS DIG チャンネルで、細胞生物学者・吉森保氏（大阪大学名誉教授）に
よるオートファジー研究の対談動画を興味深く視聴しました。

この動画では、細胞が不要な成分や損傷を受けた構成要素を分解・再利用する仕組
み「オートファジー」について触れ、オートファジーが正常に働くことが老化や病
気の進行を抑える可能性として議論されていました。オートファジーを抑える因子
の一つに「ルビコン」というタンパク質があり、基礎研究ではルビコンの働きを弱
めるとモデル生物で寿命延長や老化関連 phenotype の改善が観察されているという
内容でした。

また、徳島の伝統発酵茶「阿波晩茶」の成分が、オートファジー活性化に寄与する
可能性が紹介されていましたが、これは基礎研究・初期の実験段階の報告であり、
ヒトへの直接的な効果が立証された臨床データではありません。

このような内容は、一文だけでは誇大広告のようにも聞こえますが、吉森氏の研究
実績を踏まえると科学的な知見への入口として有益だと感じました。

オートファジーや老化の仕組みに興味がある方は、該当動画や関連書籍をあわせて

Editor's Note

I watched with great interest an interview video on the TBS CROSS DIG 
channel featuring Tamotsu Yoshimori, a cell biologist and a world-leading
 authority on autophagy research.

The video explained that if unnecessary cellular waste -- specifically a
 protein called "Rubicon" - is continuously removed, people may become less
 susceptible to disease and their lifespan could be extended by 20 percent 
or more. It was also suggested that Awa-bancha (note: not ordinary bancha,
but bancha made from mature tea leaves) helps eliminate this aging-related
 protein Rubicon.

Taken at face value, such claims might sound like the exaggerated advertising
 slogans of a quack. However, Professor Yoshimori is regarded as a potential
 candidate for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which prompted me 
to watch the video to see how persuasive his arguments actually were.

As a result, I realized how ignorant -- and how biased  -- I (or rather, we)
 am when it comes to the latest scientific findings.
