You may have been feeling that I have allowed only for bad motives, or,
 at best, such as are ethically neutral. I am afraid they are, as a 
rule, more powerful than more altruistic motives, but I do not deny 
that altruistic motives exist, and may, on occasion, be effective. 
The agitation against slavery in England in the early nineteenth 
century was indubitably altruistic, and was thoroughly effective. 
Its altruism was proved by the fact that in 1833 British taxpayers paid
many millions in compensation to Jamaican landowners for the liberation
 of their slaves, and also by the fact that at the Congress of Vienna 
the British Government was prepared to make important concessions with

る『幸福論』）という本を出版した。・・・この本は,３つの異なった階層の
読者によって異なった評価を受けた。・・・
　いずれの評価が正しいのか,私にはわからない。はっきりしていることは、

　さて、本日の投稿は、ラッセルの『幸福論』からの引用です。原書のタイト
ルは The Conquest of Happiness （『直訳すれば『幸福の獲得』）で、この
書名には、幸福は棚からぼた餅のように待つものではなく、自ら努力してつか
みとるものだ、という意味がこめられています。
　ラッセル自身、次のように述べています。（The Autobiography of Bertrand
 Russell』v.2, chapter 6）
「この本が書かれたのは、もし自分が我慢できる程度のいかなる幸福を維持し
ようとしても、大変な自制心や苦い経験から学んだ多くのことを必要とした、

　当時のラッセルは、妻ドーラ（再婚相手）との関係に大きな影響を受けてい
ました。彼女に婚外子がいたことがその背景にあり、当時の英国では、婚外子
であっても離婚していなければ、夫婦の正式な子として扱われる仕組みになっ
ていたようです。
　約100年前に出版されたラッセルの『幸福論』は、現在でも世界中で読み継が
れています。日本でもこれまでに７種類の翻訳が刊行され、一番新しい岩波文
庫版（安藤貞雄訳｝も45刷を超えています。　私の翻訳及びコメントとあわせ

As previously announced, today marks the final post of Bertrand Russell
Quotes 366. From now on, it will be replaced by Bertrand Russell Quotes
 - Occasional Edition, which will appear from time to time rather than 
on a daily basis. As I have grown older, it has become increasingly 
difficult to maintain the same quality while posting every day, and for
 the sake of my health, I have decided to reduce the frequency. Thank 
you very much for following along for so long.
Today's post is a quotation from Russell's The Conquest of Happiness
 (literally , a title which conveys the idea that happiness is not 
something to be passively awaited, like a windfall, but something to be
 actively won through effort.
Russell himself wrote the following (The Autobiography of Bertrand 
Russell, Vol. 2, Chapter 6):
"What I do know is that the book was written at a time when I needed 
much self-command and much that I had learned by painful experience if
 I was to maintain any endurable level of happiness."
At that time, Russell was deeply affected by his relationship with his
second wife, Dora. One factor behind this was that she had children by
 another man, and under English law at the time, such children were 
legally regarded as the husband's unless the couple had divorced.
Published nearly a hundred years ago, The Conquest of Happiness 
continues to be read worldwide. In Japan, seven different translations
 have appeared so far, with the most recent Iwanami Bunko edition
 (translated by Sadao Ando) having gone through more than forty-five
 printings. I hope you will read Professor Ando's translation as well,
 together with my own translations and comments.

　私たちの友人ルパートとエリザベス・クロウシェイ＝ウィリアムズ（夫妻）
が、私たちと長男夫婦の子どもたちのために、休暇用にちょうど良いだろうと
思う家――プラス・ペンリン――を見つけてくれていた。その家は小さくて飾
り気はなかったが、素敵な庭と小さな果樹園、そして立派なブナの木が何本も
あった。何よりも素晴らしかったのは、その家からの眺めだった。南には海、
西にはポートマドックとカーナーヴォンの丘陵、北にはグラスリンの谷をさか
のぼってスノードン山まで見渡せた。

Our friends Rupert and Elizabeth Crawshay-Williams had found a house, 
Plas Penrhyn, that they thought would make a pleasant holiday house for
 us and the children. It was small and unpretentious, but had a 
delightful garden and little orchard and a number of fine beech trees.
 Above all, it had a most lovely view, south to the sea, west to 
Portmadoc and the Caernarvon hills, and north up the valley of the 
Glaslyn to Snowdon　... We rented it as soon as possible.

　随分前に投稿したものを、訳とコメントを変えて再投稿します。

　ラッセルは、1952年12月(80歳の時)、エディス・フィンチと再婚しました。
翌年、ロンドン郊外に４階建ての家を購入し、定職についていなかった長男ジ
ョンの一家のために１、２階を使わせました。ところが、しばらくして長男は
精神疾患（統合失調症とされています）を患い、1953年末、長男夫婦は「子ど
もの世話に疲れ果てた」と結論を下し、ラッセル夫妻とクリスマスの晩餐を共
にした後、食事の残りを持ち、３人の子ども（ラッセルの孫）を置いて家を出
て行ってしまいました。そのため、ラッセル夫妻はその後、孫たちの生活の面
倒を見ざるを得なくなりました。
　ラッセルはもともと田舎で老後を過ごすことを望んでおり、1955年（83歳の
時）に、友人が探してくれた北ウェールズの家「プラス・ペンリン」を購入し
、移り住みました。
　添付した写真は、牧野力氏（故人。当時、早稲田大学政経学部教授）が1972
年夏に、プラス・ペンリンの庭側から屋敷を撮影したものと、庭から西北のポ
ースマドック（ Portmadog）方向を撮影したものです。写真のネガは牧野教授
の遺言により、同氏のラッセル関係蔵書とともに松下が譲り受け、1983年に早
稲田大学に寄贈しました。これらは、同大学教育学部教員図書室にラッセル文
庫として保存されています。
　この写真からも、家からの眺めの素晴らしさがわかると思います。私自身も
1980年夏に訪れて同様の写真を写しましたが、あいにく天候に恵まれず、満足
のいくものになりませんでした。

I am reposting an article I posted a long time ago, with a revised 
translation and comments.

In December 1952, at the age of 80, Russell married Edith Finch. The 
following year, he purchased a four-story house in the suburbs of 
London and allowed his eldest son John - who was then unemployed - and
 his family to use the first and second floors. However, before long,
 John developed a mental illness (believed to have been schizophrenia),
 and by the end of 1953, John and his wife, feeling utterly exhausted
 from caring for their children, left the house after having Christmas
 dinner with Russell and Edith, taking the leftover food but leaving 
behind their three children (Russell's grandchildren). As a result, 
Russell and Edith had no choice but to take care of the children 
themselves.
Since Russell had always wanted to spend his later years in the 
countryside, in 1955, at the age of 83, he purchased a house in North
 Wales called "Plas Penrhyn," which had been found for him by a friend,
 and moved there.
The attached photographs were taken in the summer of 1972 by the late
 Professor Makino (then a professor at Waseda University's School of 
Political Science and Economics): one shows Plas Penrhyn from the 
garden side, and the other captures the view northwest toward Portmadog
 from the garden. In accordance with Professor Makino's will, the 
negatives, along with his collection of Russell-related books, were 
inherited by Matsushita and donated to Waseda University in 1983. They
 have since been preserved in the Faculty of Education's Library for 
Faculty Members as the Russell Library.
These photos clearly show the magnificent view from the house. When I
 visited in the summer of 1980, I took similar photos myself, but 
unfortunately, the weather was unfavorable, and the results were not
 very satisfactory.
