 knowledge is, I think, mainly actuated by love of power. And so are

supreme example. Napoleon had, I think, no ideological preference for
 France over Corsica, but if he had become Emperor of Corsica he would
 not have been so great a man as he became by pretending to be a 
Frenchman. Such men, however, are not qtute pure examples, since they
 also derive immense satisfaction from vanity. The purest type is that
 of the Eminence Grise -- the power behind the throne that never 
appears in public, and merely hugs itself with the secret thought: 
"How little these puppets know who is pulling the strings.” Baron 
Holstein, who controlled the foreign policy of the German Empire from
 1890 to 1906, illustrates this type to perfection. He lived in a slum;
 he never appeared in society; he avoided meeting the Emperor, except 
on one single occasion when the Emperor's importunity could not be 
resisted; he refused all invitations to Court functions, on the ground
 that he possessed no court dress. He had acquired secrets which 
enabled him to blackmail the Chancellor and many of the Kaiser's 
intimates. He used the power of blackmail, not to acquire wealth, or
 fame, or any other obvious advantage, but merely to compel the 
adoption of the foreign policy he preferred. In the East, similar 
characters were not very uncommon among eunuchs.

＜寸言＞
　人生は予測できないものです。一生の間には思いがけないことが多く起こり
、青年期から老年期まで、一貫した目的を追求できたという感慨を持てる人は
そう多くはないでしょう。
　人間の寿命も予想がはずれることが少なくありません。もちろん、体が丈夫
で精神的に安定している人は、通常、長生きします。しかし、個々の人間に目
を向ければ、長生きすると思っていた人が短命だったり、逆に短命だろうと思

　ラッセルは微妙な表現をしているので、多分、ChatGPT はうまく訳せないだ
ろうと思い、試しに訳させたところ、次のように訳しました。
「哲学は、人生よりも統一されている。人生において私たちは多くの欲望を抱
くが、哲学はたいてい、全体にまとまりを与える支配的な一つの欲望によって
鼓舞されている。」

　一見するとおかしいところはないと思う人が多いのではないでしょうか？　
しかし、ラッセルは「Philosophy」ではなく、「Philosophies」という複数形
を使っています。つまり、ラッセルは抽象的な「哲学（一般）」ではなく、
「個別の哲学体系）」のことを言っています。ラッセルの記述理論（タイプ理
論）を知っている人なら、このレベルの区別にすぐ気づくはずです。つまり、
『哲学』(Philosophy)は、個々の哲学体系（Philosophies）よりも一階上（一
段上位の）の概念です。
　さらに「inspired by」を ChatGPTは「鼓舞された」とか「触発された」と
訳しました。通常であればそれでもよいかも知れません、しかし、この文脈で
は、ラッセルが言おうとしているニュアンスが十分伝わりません。
　ChatGPTと議論を重ねた結果、ようやく次の訳にたどりつきました。英語に
自信のある人でも、哲学に疎い人にはこのような訳は難しいかも知れません。
「個々の哲学体系は、人生そのものよりも統一されている。
　人生において私たちは多くの欲望を抱くが、哲学体系はたいてい、全体に首
尾一貫性を与える支配的な一つの欲望を原動力として成り立っている。」

Life is unpredictable. Over the course of a lifetime, many unexpected
 things occur, and there are not many people who can look back from old
age and feel that they have consistently pursued a single purpose since
 their youth.
Human lifespans also often defy prediction. Of course, those who are 
physically robust and mentally stable usually live long lives. However,
 when we look at individual cases, it is not unusual to find someone 
thought likely to live long die young, or conversely, someone expected
 to have a short life live to an advanced age.
Now, please read the following "Russell's Words of the Day":
Philosophies are more unified than life. In life, we have many desires,
 but a philosophy is usually inspired by some one dominant desire which
 gives it coherence.
Russell's wording here is subtle, so I suspected ChatGPT might not 
translate it well. When I tried it, this is what it came up with:
「「哲学は、人生よりも統一されている。人生において私たちは多くの欲望を
抱くが、哲学はたいてい、全体にまとまりを与える支配的な一つの欲望によっ
て鼓舞されている。」
At first glance, this may seem free of problems to many readers. 
However, Russell uses the plural "Philosophies," not the singular
 "Philosophy." This means he is not referring to philosophy in the 
abstract, but to individual philosophical systems. Anyone familiar with
 Russell's theory of descriptions (type theory) would immediately 
recognize this distinction. In other words, "Philosophy" is a concept
 one level higher than the individual philosophical systems
 (“Philosophies”).
Moreover, ChatGPT rendered inspired by as "encouraged by"（鼓舞されて）
 or "stimulated by." （触発されて）While that might be acceptable in 
ordinary contexts, it fails to convey the nuance Russell intends here.
After much discussion with ChatGPT, I finally arrived at the following
 translation. Even someone confident in English might find this 
difficult without some background in philosophy:
「個々の哲学体系は、人生そのものよりも統一されている。人生において私た
ちは多くの欲望を抱くが、哲学体系はたいてい、全体に首尾一貫性を与える支
配的な一つの欲望を原動力として成り立っている。」

 編集後記　今は何歳の知力？

　歳をとるにつれて、若いころのように物事を早く処理することは難しくなりま
す。判断力や思考力はむしろ深まっているようにも感じますが、もしかすると、
そう思いたいだけかも知れません。確実に衰えつつあるのは記憶力です。個人差
はあるでしょうが、歳を重ねるにつれて記憶力が劣化することは、多くの人が認
めることでしょう。

　最近は、現在の自分の論理的思考能力や記憶力や想像力などが、それぞれ何歳
くらいに相当するのか、ふと考えることがあります。しかし、実際に試して明ら
かにしたいとは思いません。結果を知ったら、急に老いが進むかもしれないから
です。そうであれば、自分を騙し騙し生きるしかないようです。

　年寄りのこうした感慨に共感してくれる人は、ぜひ年配の人を大切にしましょ
う。まずは私を大切にしてもらえると嬉しく思います（笑）。

As we grow older, it becomes increasingly difficult to process things as
 quickly as we could in our youth. While I sometimes feel that my judgment
 and thinking have deepened, it may be only wishful thinking. What is 
certainly declining is my memory. There are individual differences, of

deteriorate with age.

Lately, I occasionally wonder what age my current abilities -- logical 
thinking, memory, imagination, and so on -- might correspond to. However,
 I have no desire to actually test them. Knowing the results might make me
 feel the effects of aging more suddenly. If that is the case, I suppose 
the only option is to live while deceiving myself.

Those who can sympathize with such reflections of the elderly should 
cherish older people. I would be happy if, first of all, they could cherish
