　では、なぜ人々はそこまで頑なにそれ（神の意志）に固執するのだろうか？
 部分的には伝統からであるが、部分的には他の理由からでもある。 それは、
そうでなければ不足しがちな確信と確実性をあなたに与えてくれる。「前進せ
よ、キリストの兵士達よ、戦争に向かうように行進せよ」というのは励ましの
言葉である。神の意志が特定の行動を要求すると信じることで結束する人々は
、そのように信ぜず結束していない人々よりも、より強い活力と情熱を持って
敵と戦うことが期待されるかもしれない。 我が国（英国）の軍隊を統括する
権威者達と時折接触する中で、彼らのほとんど全員が非常に信仰心が篤いこと
を、また、彼らの信仰の基礎を探求すると、キリスト教の信仰が水爆を投下す

Why then do people cling to it so obstinately? Partly from tradition,
but partly also for other reasons. It gives you an assurance and a 
certainty which are otherwise likely to be lacking. "Onward, Christian
soldiers, marching as to war" is an invigorating exhortation. Those 
who are united in believing that the Will of God enjoins certain things
which the enemy does not do may be expected to fight the enemy with 
more energy and gusto, and with less compunction, than if they were not
inspired by this belief. In my occasional contacts with those in 
authority over our armed forces I have found almost all of them deeply
religious, and, when I have inquired into the basis of their faith, 
I have usually found that they think belief in Christianity encouraging
to those who have to drop hydrogen bombs. I will not, at the moment, 
argue this matter as it belongs rather to politics than to ethics.
I will merely remark that, as one whose ethic has no supernatural 
source, I am not wholly persuaded that readiness for large-scale 
homicide deserves whole-hearted ethical admiration.

　「大国間の対立」

　アメリカでは、揉め事の原因（問題）は共産主義であると見なされ、大国間
の対立とは考えられていないため、もしロシアや中国が共産主義を放棄したと
大々的にアピールすれば、彼らはすぐに許される（受け入れられる）ことにな
るだろう。しかし、（揉め事の）真の原因であるナショナリズムは依然として
残り、現在と同様の緊張状態がすぐに再び生じるだろう。
The belief, in America, that the trouble is Communism rather than the
 rivalry of Great Powers would cause the Russians and Chinese to be 
quickly forgiven if they made a parade of ceasing to be Communist. 
Nationalism, which is the real cause of trouble, would remain, and 
there would soon again be a state of tension analogous to that which
 exists at present.

　＜寸言＞
　第二次世界大戦後の（あるいは朝鮮戦争以後の）資本主義国と共産主義国と
の対立がはげしい時代には、東西の両陣営が、自分達の陣営が勝利することに
よって新しい世界秩序のもとで平和と繁栄がもたらされると考えていました。
　しかし、当時ラッセルが言ったように、より大きな問題は大国間の対立であ
り、そのことは、トランプ大統領の振る舞いによって最近クローズアップされ
てきました。
　ロシアは核兵器の大量保有によって軍事的には今でも大国ですが、経済的に
はアメリカの競争相手になりえないほど弱体化しています。現在保有している
核兵器も中古化していっており、更新したり維持したりすることがますます困
難になっていくと思われます。
　他方、中国は、いまだに共産党の一党独裁状態ですが、しだいに資本主義の
仕組みを導入しており、旅行やネット情報などで、欧米や日本の豊かで自由な
暮らしぶりを知る国民が増えていますので、20～30年後には激変している可能
性があります。
　しかしそのように世界の均一化が進んでいっても、国連が現在のように非力
のままであれば米中対立は抜き差しならないものにならないとも限りません。
　トランプ大統領は MAGA（Make America Great Again）を叫び、アメリカ国民
のナショナリズムをあおっており、高関税政策などによって、世界に新たな緊
張状態を生み出しています。軍事力が背景になければそれほど問題にならない
でしょうが、アメリカは飛びぬけた軍事力を有しており、軍事力は必ず威嚇に
使われます。トランプは戦争は嫌いだと口では言っていても、それは大国同士
では戦争をしないといっているだけです。中小国に対しては圧倒的な軍事力や
経済力を背景に従う国には友好的にふるまい、反抗的な態度にでる国はつぶし
にかかるというのが、トランプの「ディール」の本質のようです。トランプは
軌道修正することなく、任期中、突っ走るのをやめないでしょうか？

During the period of intense confrontation between capitalist and 
communist countries after World War II (or after the Korean War), both
 the Eastern and Western blocs believed that peace and prosperity would
be achieved under a new world order brought about by their own victory.
However, as Russell pointed out at the time, the larger issue was the 
rivalry between great powers. This has recently been brought into focus
 by the behavior of President Trump.
Militarily, Russia remains a major power due to its large stockpile of 
nuclear weapons, but economically, it has weakened to the point where 
it can no longer compete with the United States. Furthermore, its 
existing nuclear arsenal is aging, and it is becoming increasingly 
difficult to modernize or maintain these weapons.
On the other hand, China remains under the one-party rule of the 
Communist Party but is gradually incorporating capitalist mechanisms.
 With the spread of travel and internet access, more and more Chinese
 citizens are becoming aware of the affluent and free lifestyles in the
 West and Japan. As a result, China could undergo drastic changes in 
the next 20 to 30 years.
However, even if the world continues to become more uniform in this 
way, if the United Nations remains as powerless as it is today, the
 U.S.-China conflict could become inescapable.
President Trump, shouting "MAGA" (Make America Great Again), has been 
stirring up nationalism among the American people. His high-tariff 
policies, among other measures, are creating new tensions worldwide. 
If military power were not involved, this might not be a significant
 problem. However, the United States possesses overwhelmingly superior
 military strength, and military power is inevitably used as a means of
 intimidation.
Although Trump claims to dislike war, he is merely saying that great 
powers will not go to war with each other. When it comes to smaller 
nations, he appears to use America's overwhelming military and economic
 power to act amicably toward compliant countries while attempting to 
crush those that show defiance. This seems to be the essence of Trump's
 "deal-making" strategy.
Will Trump continue to charge ahead without correcting his course 
throughout his term?

 編集後記　のんびり旅歩き番組

　若い人はテレビを見ない人も多いとのことですが、テレビ世代の私はやはり
テレビが好きで、いろいろなテレビ番組を見ています。（ただし、SNSもよく
見ています。）　また、年齢を重ねていかば多くの人がそうでしょうが、人気
タレントなどがのんびりゆっくり旅する様子を紹介する番組を好んで見ていま
す。ブラタモリ（NHK総合）も本日から復活するとのことで、楽しみです。

　いや、こう書くと誤解を与えそうです。旅番組をよく見てはいますが、一番
多く見ているのは、新しい知識を得られる番組（科学番組、歴史番組、いろい
ろ考えさせる要素のあるクイズ番組、ドキュメンタリー番組、その他）のほう
をずっと多く見ています。

　もちろん、本もよく読みますが、だいぶ前から、読書時間よりもTV視聴時間
のほうがずっと長くなっています。

These days, many young people don't watch television, or so I've heard.
But as someone who grew up in the TV generation, I still love it and 
enjoy a wide variety of programs. (That said, I also spend a fair bit 
of time on social media.) 

Lately, perhaps as a result of getting older, I find myself especially
 drawn to relaxed travel shows where celebrities take their time 
exploring different places, appreciating the scenery, tasting local 
food, and just enjoying the moment. Bura Tamori (on NHK General) is one
 such favorite of mine, and I'm looking forward to it.

But I should clarify, while I do enjoy travel shows, I actually spend 
more time watching programs that feed my curiosity: science and history 
programs, documentaries, quiz shows that make you think, and so on.

Of course, I still read books regularly, but for quite a while now, I've
 been spending far more time watching TV than reading. 
I sometimes wonder, does that mean I'm regressing?
