こうして、どのような行為が承認されるかということよりも、私達が目指す
べき結果（効果）について人類の間でより多くの合意が存在しているという結
論に導かれる。承認される行為とは幸福や快楽をもたらす可能性が高い行為で
あるというヘンリー・シジウィックの主張は、大ざっぱに言って真実だと考え
る。 以前は違反すると破滅的だと考えられていた古代のタブーが、そのタブ

「プラトンに高貴な嘘あるいは有益な嘘？」
しかし、社会の結束は有用な嘘の助けなしには不可能であるという見解を、
私は到底受け入れる気にはならない。この見解は、プラトンや歴代の実際的な
政治家たちによって是認されてきたことは知っているが、私は、たとえ実際的
な観点から見ても、この見解は誤りだと思う。
But I am quite unwilling to accept the view that social cohesion is
impossible except by the help of useful lies. I know that this view has
the sanction of Plato and of a long line of practical politicians, but
I think that even from a practical point of view it is mistaken.

＜寸言＞
「政治家は嘘つきの始まり」という言葉は世界中で使われているようです。
この言葉の意味するところは何でしょうか？ もちろん、「嘘をつく政治家が
多い」というのが最も中心的な意味のはずです。しかし、仮に政治家の視点で
考えると、違った意味合いが含まれているのではないでしょうか？
論理的思考能力や言語的表現能力が優れている政治家は、有権者（国民や市
民）に理解してもらおうと、物事を論理的に説明しようとします。しかし、
その能力が十分でない政治家は、もっぱら有権者の感情に訴えかけます。いや
、論理的思考能力の不足を自覚している政治家はそれほど多くはなく、むしろ
、かなりの政治家は、有権者は愚かな者が多く、有権者の支持を得るためには
「嘘も方便」であり、プラトンの言う「高貴な嘘」は必要悪だと考えているの
ではないでしょうか？
たとえば、トランプや安倍総理（当時）がついた嘘の数は膨大であり、政治
には嘘が必要だと考えている（安倍氏の場合は考えていた）と考えないと、
とうてい二人のことは理解できません。二人とも政治には嘘が必要と考えてい
たからこそ、似た者同士で気が合ったのではないでしょうか？ そうでないと
したら、「ただの嘘つき」ということになります。あなたはどう考えますか？
The phrase "A politician is the beginning of a liar" seems to be used
around the world. What does this phrase mean? Of course, the most
central meaning must be that "there are many politicians who lie."
However, if we consider this from a politician's perspective, doesn't
it take on a different nuance?
Politicians with strong logical thinking and linguistic abilities try
to explain things logically so that voters (the people or citizens) can
understand them. However, those who lack such abilities rely primarily
on appealing to voters' emotions. In fact, there are probably not many
politicians who are fully aware of their own lack of logical thinking
skills. Rather, quite a few politicians likely believe that many voters
are foolish and that "a lie can be a useful tool" in gaining public
support. They may even see Plato’s "noble lie" as a necessary evil.
For example, both Trump and then-Prime Minister Abe told an enormous
number of lies. Without assuming that they believed lies to be
necessary in politics (or in Abe’s case, that he had believed so), it
is impossible to understand them. Perhaps the reason they got along so
well was that they both saw lies as essential to politics. Otherwise,
they would simply be "just liars."

編集後記 アメリカは君主国家？ ― どこまでも"自己中"（＝自己中心的）
なトランプ大統領

米空軍の次世代戦闘機の名称を「F47」とするというニュースが流れました。
それを聞いた時は、あまり考えることなく、さすがにトランプと言えども、次
世代戦闘機に自分の好きな名前をつけさせることはないだろうと、早とちりし
てしまいました。
ところが、本日、「F47」というのは第47代トランプ大統領の「47」からとっ
たものであり、「トランプ氏は47というのは美しい数字だ！」と満足している
との報道があり、トランプの筋金入りの"自己中"ぶり（＝自己中心的な態度）
にあきれてしまいました。
そのようなトランプはとても民主主義国家の大統領とは言えません。周囲の
者が意見を言えない現状から見れば、アメリカは知らない間に君主制に変わり、
トランプはアメリカ国王になったかのようです。
石破総理は、杉田水脈参議院議員の差別発言に対し、国会答弁で「強烈な違
和感を感じる」と述べています。石破総理には、トランプ大統領の数々の不適
切な発言に対しても「違和感を感じる」と言ってもらいたいところです。しか
し、残念ながら、トランプによって属国扱いされている日本の総理はそのよう
な「不遜な発言」はできそうもありません。 （松下）
Is America a Monarchy? - President Trump's Utter Self-Centeredness
News has emerged that the U.S. Air Force's next-generation fighter jet
will be named the "F47." When I first heard this, I assumed, even Trump
wouldn't be so brazen as to name a next-generation fighter jet after
himself. I was quick to dismiss the thought.
However, today it was reported that "F47" was derived from the fact
that Trump is the 47th president, and that he declared, "47 is a
beautiful number!" with great satisfaction. I was left astounded by
the sheer extent of Trump's self-centeredness.
A leader like Trump can hardly be called the president of a democratic
nation. Given how those around him are unable to voice their opinions,
one might say that America has unknowingly transformed into a monarchy,
with Trump as its king.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ishiba stated in a parliamentary response
that he felt a "strong sense of discomfort" regarding discriminatory
remarks made by Senator Mio Sugita. One can only hope that Prime
Minister Ishiba would also express similar discomfort over Trump's many
inappropriate statements. Unfortunately, as Japan is treated as a
vassal state by Trump, its prime minister seems unable to make such an
"audacious remark."
