　第４章：善(善い)と悪（悪い） n.14

　もし人類が「正しい（正義）」とは何かについて合意していたなら、「正し
い（正義）」を倫理学の基本概念とし、「善い（善）」を正しい行為によって
達成されるものとして定義することができたであろう。しかし、これまで見て
きたように、何が正しく何が間違っているかについては、異なる共同体の間で
非常に広範な意見の相違（乖離）がある。一般的に、特にタブー道徳に関する
場合、この意見の相違（乖離）は行為の効果に関する信念の違いに起因してお
り、行為のどのような結果が望ましいと考えられるかについては、多様性がは
るかに少ない。この事実があるからこそ、むしろ「善」の観点から「正しい
（正義）」を定義するほうが、その逆（「正しい（正義）」の観点から「善い
（善）」を定義すること）よりも良いのである。

If mankind were agreed as to what is "right", we could take "right" as
 the fundamental concept in ethics, and define "the good" as what is 
achieved by right conduct. But as we have seen, there is a very wide 
divergence between different communities as to what they consider right
 or wrong. In general, particularly in the case of tabu morality, this
 divergence is traceable to a difference in beliefs as to the effects 
of actions, and there is much less diversity as to what results of 
actions are thought desirable. It is this fact that makes it better 
to define “right" in terms of “good" rather than vice versa.

　特別に怠惰ではないほとんどの人は、世界全体においてではなくとも、少な
くとも自分の身近な環境において、自分の適切な分け前以上の権力を欲する。
歴史上、戦争や革命は主に権力欲によって引き起こされてきた。専制君主がた
いてい暗殺される国では、それにもかかわらず、専制君主の座をめぐり血みど
ろの競争が繰り広げられてきている。西欧世界では、過去数世紀にわたり、恣
意的な権力は急速に衰退してきた。王、奴隷所有者、夫、父親が次々とその地
位を失い、究極的な権力の分配を可能な限り均等にしようと真剣に試みられて
きた。この点で、いわゆる公正（正義）の主張は非常に強い。権力を持つ者は
ほとんどの場合、それを乱用する。

Almost everybody who is not exceptionally lazy desires more than his 
due share of power, if not in the world at large, at least in his 
immediate environment. Wars and revolutions, throughout history, have
 been caused mainly by love of power. In States where tyrants are 
usually assassinated, there is, nevertheless, bloody competition for

＜寸言＞
　権力（を求める・追及する）という現象は、一部の権力者に関係しているだ
けのものではありません。その規模は最高権力から（何らかの場面で）少し優
遇してもらうだけ力関係まで、様々なレベルのものがあります。
　３選を果たした小池百合子東京都知事も強大な権力を持っています。採算を
度外視し、東京都庁をプロジェクションマッピング で飾る契約（２年間で４８
億円←原価は10億程度といわれているもの）を結び、インバウンドにも貢献し
ているとの主張だけで通ってしまいます。NHKも、民放も、無駄使いについて
指摘する勇気を持ち合わせていません。

 編集後記　カンブリア宮殿「下町発のベンチャー、画期的な発明で・・・」
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

　カンブリア宮殿はよく視聴していますが、７月11日放映の「下町発のベンチ
ャー、画期的な発明で世界の水不足を解決！」もとてもよい内容でした。

　日本は比較的水資源が豊富なので節水には余り注目が集まらず、もっぱら節
電に目が注がれています。しかし、世界を見れば「節水」は非常に重要な課題
であり、「節水」のため技術、というより、総合的解決策に取り組む（東大阪
の町工場の）下町ベンチャーはとても貴重な存在だと思いました。このベンチ
ャー企業は90%以上の節水ができる高性能バルブを開発しており、世界から注
目されています。サウジアラビアなどの、水の確保のために膨大な予算を費や
している地域において「節水」は特に切実な問題です。

　「節水」技術だけでも大変優れたものですが、このベンチャーはもっと大き
な構想をもって、世界の課題に取り組んでおり、刺激的な内容でした。
