下記は牧野力氏による「要旨」訳（注：ただし、少し字句を修正）に原文を
追加したものです。
中世の物の見方と近代科学の物の味方との重要な相違は 権威に対する考え
方（の相違）にある。
スコラ学者は、聖書、カトリックの教義、また、アリストテレスの学説には
疑問の余地のない権威があると考え、独創的な思想、また事実の探求でさえ、
思索の大胆さの不変の境界を越えてはならなかった(ならないとされていた)。
・・・。木星に衛星があるか、物体はその質量に応ずる速度で落下するか等
の問題の解決は、観察に頼るのではなく、アリストテレスや聖書からの演繹に
よって決定されるべき問題と考えられた。
神学と科学との闘争は、権威と観察との闘争だった。
科学者が自己の主張を信じる理由は、権威がそれを真理と発表したからでは
ない。逆に、感覚の明確さに訴え、 必要な観察により立証された明白な事実
に立脚すると認めた説だけを主張したからである。
事実観察という新しい方法は、理論的にも、実際的にも、大きな成果を得た
ので、神学はしだいに科学に順応せざるをえなかった
聖書の都合の悪い言葉を比喩や象徴と解釈された（されるようになった）。
新教（プロテスタント）は、権威を最初教会と聖書だけに与え、次に個人の魂
へと遷した。宗教的生活は、たとえば、アダムとイブの歴史的実在（本当に実
在した話かどうか）に依存しないとしだいに認められるようになった。
( An important difference between the mediaeval outlook and that of
modern science is in regard to authority. To the schoolmen, the Bible,
the dogmas of the Catholic faith, and (almost equally) the teachings
of Aristotle, were above question ; original thought, and even
investigation of facts, must not overstep the limits set by these
immutable boundaries of speculative daring.
Whether there are people at the antipodes, whether Jupiter has
satellites, and whether bodies fall at a rate proportional to their
mass, were questions to be decided, not by observation, but by
deduction from Aristotle or the Scriptures.
The conflict between theology and science was quite as much a conflict
between authority and observation. The men of science did not ask that
propositions should be believed because some important authority had
said they were true ; on the contrary, they appealed to the evidence
of the senses, and maintained only such doctrines as they believed to
be based upon facts which were patent to all who chose to make the
necessary observations. The new method achieved such immense
successes, both theoretical and practical, that theology was gradually
forced to accommodate itself to science. Inconvenient Bible texts were
interpreted allegorically or figuratively ; Protestants transferred
the seat of authority in religion, first from the Church and the Bible
to the Bible alone, and then to the individual soul. It came
gradually to be recognized that the religious life does not depend
upon pronouncements as to matters of fact, for instance, the
historical existence of Adam and Eve. )

「信条（信念）と信条（信念）の衝突」
・・・最も堅く，最も熱烈に保持されている信念は、しばしば，最も（それ
を信じるべき）証拠の少いものである，ということを発見するであろう。人間
のある大集団がＡを信じ、他の大集団がＢを信していれば、どちらの集団も,
他の集団はあまりにも馬鹿げたことを信じていると言って，相手の集団を憎む
という傾向がある。
この傾向に対する最善の治療法は証拠にもとづいて進む習慣であり、証拠の
ないときには確信しない（確信を差し控える）という習慣である。
... We shall discover that the beliefs that are held most firmly and
most passionately are very often those for which there is least
evidence. When one large body of men believes A, and another large
body of men believes B, there is a tendency of each body to hate the
other for believing anything so obviously absurd.
The best cure for this tendency is the practice of going by the
evidence, and forgoing certainty where evidence is lacking.

＜寸言＞
証拠がたくさんあれば、事実を示して、論理的にわかりやすく説明すれば
相手を納得させることができるはず。従って、そのような場合には「信じる」
という現象は生じない。
証拠が少ないからこそ「信じる」「信仰する」という現象が起きてくる。そ
うして、自分が「証拠のないこと」を強く信じている場合には、そのことを非
難する人たちに対して反発を感じる。
にもかかわらず、、逆に、自分の好まないことを「証拠なしに」「信じてい
る人たち」を馬鹿にしがちである。
まことに身勝手というほかない。

編集後記 聖火リレーのスタート！ − リンダ「どうにもとまらない」？
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
一昨日（3月25日）ついに聖火リレーがスタートしました。新聞報道によれ
ば、政府の某高官は（聖火リレーが始まった以上）「もうとめられない」と
ほくそえんだ？そうです。（山本リンダを思い浮かべた人の歳が知れます？）
東京に再びオリンピックを誘致するにあたっては、多額のブラックマネー
（賄賂）が動いたとしても、「そんなの他の国もやっている」と気にしない人
も少なくないようです。誘致にあたっては、オリンピック誘致による利点（特
に経済的効果）ばかりが強調されてきました。オリンピックは商業化され、大
国でなければ開催できないほど規模が拡大し、開催費用が膨らみ続けており、
「選手ファースト」が強調されても、実際は経済的効果や国威発揚（政権維持
効果）が第一で、オリンピックの精神などは表向きの看板に過ぎなくなってい
ます。
これを機会に地震に強い東京に変えることが「可能である」という側面はあ
ったでしょうが、どこまで進んだでしょうか？ 大震災から復興したことを世
界に示すことができる（「復興五輪」）というスローガンも、むなしく響くよ
うになってきました。あいにくのこと、新型コロナに対しては、そういったス
ローガンや宣伝も効果があまりありませんでした。
もしも、オリンピックが再延長できず中止になったら、自民党政権にとって
深刻な事態になります。菅首相は退陣せざるを得なくなり、誘致した安倍総理
の面目も潰れ、自民党は大混乱に陥ってしまいます。従って、聖火リレーが始
まった以上は「もうとめられない（一安心）」という気持ちになるのは理解で
きます。しかし、「かっぱえびせん」じゃあるまいに・・・。
戦争が始まったら（敵国に弱みを見せられないので）こちらからやめると言
うわけにはいかない、といった心理と似ているのではないでしょうか？
