FROM COVER:
The recent acquisition of the Russell papers by a Canadian university created a great deal of interest and excitement. In the world of the scholar, the purchase of the papers by McMaster University was a notable achievement, not just for McMaster but for all of Canada. The papers will form the nucleus of an important research centre on twentieth-century thought and Hamilton will be receiving scholars from all over the world. However, the Russell Archive is not only for scholars but for every man. Thus, Necessary Russell has been written for the general public, to introduce the papers, life and times of one of the great men of the century. It is intended to arouse interest and curiosity in both the man and his work. If it gets people -- students and strangers particularly -- curious about the archive and reading about Russell, sets them on the path towards understanding this extraordinary man, it will serve its purpose.
