有機生命体は、原生生物（注：動物、植物、菌類のいずれにも分類されない、主に単細胞の微生物）から哲学者（注：あくまでも象徴的な意味で）に至るまで徐々に発展してきたと告げられている。そして、その発展は間違いなく進歩であると断言されている。しかし、残念ながら、この保証を与えてくれるのは哲学者（注：霊長類で一番知的だと自惚れる）であって、原生生物ではない。（Organic life, we are told, has developed gradually from the protozoon to the philosopher, and this development, we are assured, is indubitably an advance. ＜"烏の勝手でしょ"－－人間中心主義の危険性＞
「（ゾウリムシから人間への）生命の発展は間違いなく『進歩』であると断言するのは、ゾウリムシではなく哲学者自身である」－－ バートランド・ラッセルのこの鋭い皮肉は、現代の政治状況にもそのまま当てはまります。
私たちは人間だから人間の命を、日本人だから日本の利益を最優先と考えがちです。それはある種、自然な感情かもしれませんが、この「自分たちが中心である」という前提が行き過ぎると、他者への想像力を欠いた極めて危険な独善に陥ります。
その象徴が、トランプ大統領のような思考や行動のあり方です。彼はアメリカの国益を最重要視するだけでなく、あらゆる事象を「ディール（取引）」にかけ、強大な軍事力や経済力を背景に少しでも有利な条件を勝ち取れば、自らの手腕を自画自賛して悦に入ります。そこには、自国の経済的利益や既得権益を死守するためなら、他国に爆弾を落とし多数の命を奪うことへの躊躇（ためらい）すら感じられません。
権力者が口にする「国益」とは、果たして市井の人々の平穏な暮らしを守ることを指しているのでしょうか。トランプ氏の言動を見れば、それは往々にして「ディール」の成果としての数字や、自らの支持率、あるいは身内や関係者の利益にすり替えられています。
国際法を無視したこうした傍若無人な振る舞いを見て見ぬふりをすれば、他国（たとえば中国）が同様の暴挙に出ても批判する根拠を失います。しかし、高市総理は、イスラエルやアメリカによる軍事作戦で多くの民衆が犠牲になっても、日米同盟の維持を優先してか、一言の非難も口にしません。
かつてザ・ドリフターズの番組から「カラスの勝手でしょ」というフレーズが大流行しましたが、いま国際社会では「トランプの勝手でしょ」がまかり通っているかのようです。
もし、ラッセルが言うように「ゾウリムシ」の視点からこの世界を眺めたら、権力者（哲学者）たちが自画自賛する「進歩」や「勝利」は、一体どのように映るでしょうか。強者が自分の都合だけでルールを書き換える「勝手」を黙認し続けるなら、私たちは知的な発展を遂げたはずの文明を、ただの弱肉強食の野生へと逆戻りさせているに過ぎないのです。
"It’s the Crow's Business" -- The Dangers of Anthropocentrism

Unfortunately, it is the philosopher, not the protozoon, who gives us this assurance." This sharp irony from Bertrand Russell applies perfectly to the current political landscape.
Because we are human, we tend to prioritize human life; because we are Japanese, we tend to prioritize Japanese interests. While this may be a natural sentiment to some extent, when this "self-centered" premise is taken to extremes, it falls into an extremely dangerous self-righteousness that lacks empathy for others.
The epitome of this is the way President Trump thinks and acts. He not only places the highest priority on American national interests but also subjects every issue to a "deal." When he secures even slightly favorable terms backed by formidable military and economic power, he indulges in self-congratulation over his own prowess. One senses not even a hint of hesitation in his willingness to drop bombs on other countries and kill many people just to defend his nation's economic interests and vested rights.
When those in power speak of "national interest," does it truly mean protecting the peaceful lives of ordinary citizens -- Looking at Mr. Trump’s behavior, it is often substituted with figures resulting from "deals," his own approval ratings, or the interests of his family and associates.
If we turn a blind eye to such outrageous behavior that ignores international law, we lose any grounds to criticize other countries (such as China) when they commit similar atrocities. Yet, even when many civilians are sacrificed in military operations by Israel or the United States, Prime Minister Takaichi does not utter a single word of condemnation-- perhaps out of a perceived need to maintain the Japan-U.S. alliance.
There was once a phrase that became a huge hit from The Drifters' TV show: "It’s the crow's business (I'll do as I please)." Today, it seems as though "It’s Trump's business" is what prevails in the international community.
If we were to view this world from the perspective of the "protozoon," as Russell suggests, how would the "progress" and "victories" boasted of by the powerful (the philosophers) appear? If we continue to condone the "selfishness" of the strong who rewrite rules for their own convenience, we are doing nothing more than regressing our supposedly intellectually advanced civilization back into the wild, where only the law of the jungle rules.
