Our friends Rupert and Elizabeth Crawshay-Williams had found a house, Plas Penrhyn, that they thought would make a pleasant holiday house for us and the children. It was small and unpretentious, but had a delightful garden and little orchard and a number of fine beech trees. Above all, it had a most lovely view, south to the sea, west to Portmadoc and the Caernarvon hills, and north up the valley of the Glaslyn to Snowdon ... We rented it as soon as possible.

ラッセルは、1952年12月（80歳の時）、エディス・フィンチと再婚しました。翌年、ロンドン郊外に４階建ての家を購入し、定職についていなかった長男ジョンの一家のために１、２階を使わせました。ところが、しばらくして長男は精神疾患（統合失調症とされています）を患い、1953年末、長男夫婦は「子どもの世話に疲れ果てた」と結論を下し、ラッセル夫妻とクリスマスの晩餐を共にした後、食事の残りを持ち、３人の子ども（ラッセルの孫）を置いて家を出て行ってしまいました。そのため、ラッセル夫妻はその後、孫たちの生活の面倒を見ざるを得なくなりました。
ラッセルはもともと田舎で老後を過ごすことを望んでおり、1955年（83歳の時）に、友人が探してくれた北ウェールズの家「プラス・ペンリン」を購入し、移り住みました。
添付した写真は、牧野力氏（故人。当時、早稲田大学政経学部教授）が1972年夏に、プラス・ペンリンの庭側から屋敷を撮影したものと、庭から西北のポースマドック（ Portmadog）方向を撮影したものです。写真のネガは牧野教授の遺言により、同氏のラッセル関係蔵書とともに松下が譲り受け、1983年に早稲田大学に寄贈しました。これらは、同大学教育学部教員図書室にラッセル文庫として保存されています。
この写真からも、家からの眺めの素晴らしさがわかると思います。私自身も1980年夏に訪れて同様の写真を写しましたが、あいにく天候に恵まれず、満足のいくものになりませんでした。
I am reposting an article I posted a long time ago, with a revised translation and comments.
In December 1952, at the age of 80, Russell married Edith Finch. The following year, he purchased a four-story house in the suburbs of London and allowed his eldest son John - who was then unemployed - and his family to use the first and second floors. However, before long, John developed a mental illness (believed to have been schizophrenia), and by the end of 1953, John and his wife, feeling utterly exhausted from caring for their children, left the house after having Christmas dinner with Russell and Edith, taking the leftover food but leaving behind their three children (Russell's grandchildren). As a result, Russell and Edith had no choice but to take care of the children themselves.
Since Russell had always wanted to spend his later years in the countryside, in 1955, at the age of 83, he purchased a house in North Wales called "Plas Penrhyn," which had been found for him by a friend, and moved there.
The attached photographs were taken in the summer of 1972 by the late Professor Makino (then a professor at Waseda University's School of Political Science and Economics): one shows Plas Penrhyn from the garden side, and the other captures the view northwest toward Portmadog from the garden. In accordance with Professor Makino's will, the negatives, along with his collection of Russell-related books, were inherited by Matsushita and donated to Waseda University in 1983. They have since been preserved in the Faculty of Education's Library for Faculty Members as the Russell Library.
These photos clearly show the magnificent view from the house. When I visited in the summer of 1980, I took similar photos myself, but unfortunately, the weather was unfavorable, and the results were not very satisfactory.
