If your hopes and wishes are confined to yourself, or your family, or your nation, or your class, or the adherents of your creed, you will find that all your affections and all your kindly feelings are paralleled by dislikes and hostile sentiments. From such a duality in men's feelings spring almost all the major evils in human life--cruelties, oppressions, persecutions, and wars.

Although it is an old-fashioned idea, human mental activity should be viewed from the three perspectives of "knowledge, emotion, and will" -- that is, "knowledge," "emotion," and "will." (It might also be worth adding "character" as a human quality, but I will refrain from doing so this time.)
People who are rich in knowledge but narrow-minded, those whose hearts are open but who lack essential knowledge, and those who are rich in knowledge and emotion but indecisive and cause trouble for others are generally not well received by society.
However, in the case of politicians, the balance of "knowledge, emotion, and will" is not necessarily valued. In reality, candidates who share similar prejudices and ways of thinking often win elections. The reason why candidates who engage in hate speech sometimes win is that a significant number of voters prioritize effectiveness while harboring their own biases.
An ideal politician would be one who is full of intelligence, rich in knowledge, and broad-minded, but unfortunately, in today's world, such individuals are rare in politics.
Of course, there are also many people who vote for the safest candidate through process of elimination. So, who do you, "in the end," end up voting for?
