菜食主義者の獰猛さ
菜食主義者は、蠅一匹（虫一匹）殺さないおだやかで礼儀正しい人間だという通俗的な観念がある。菜食主義者は、蠅一匹（虫一匹）殺さないかもしれない。これに関して私ははっきり言えないけれども、彼らが蝿（虫）に示す思いやりを、人間にまでは及ぼさないことは確かである。菜食（肉を食べないこと）を支持する最大の根拠は、たぶん、菜食は菜食を実行する人間に活力と喧嘩早い性質を植え付ける、という点であろう。出典： ラッセル『アメリカン・エッセイ集』の中の「菜食主義者の獰猛さ」
There is a popular notion that vegetarians are mild and gentle folk who would not hurt a fly. Perhaps they would not hurt a fly. As to this, I cannot speak, but their charity towards flies certainly does not extend to human beings. Perhaps the most powerful argument in favour of a vegetarian diet is the vigour and pugnacity which it gives to those who practise it.
