相思相愛(自我の融合)
二人の人間が相手に対して本物の'相互的(双方向の)関心'を持っているという意昧での愛情、即ち、相手を幸福のための手段として見るだけではなく、むしろ共通の利益（幸福）を持つ'結合体'だと感じる愛情は、真の幸福の最も重要な要素の一つであり、自我が鋼鉄の壁の中に閉じ込められていて、このように自我を拡大することが不可能な人は、たとえ仕事（キャリア）の面でどんなに成功していても、'人生が提供する最良のもの'をつかみ損なっていることになる。 (『ラッセル幸福論』第12章「愛情」)Affection in the sense of a genuiun reciprocal interest for two persons in each other, not solely as means to each other's good, but rather as a combination having a common good, is one of the most important elements of real happiness, and the man whose ego is so enclosed within steel walls that this enlargement of it is impossible misses the best that life has to offer, however suceessful he may be in his career.
