過労の原因と休息
過労が原因だとされている害は、ほとんど過労によるものではなく、何らかの悩みや心配によるものである。情緒的な疲労のやっかいな点は、休息を妨げるということだ。人は疲れれば疲れるほど、仕事をやめることができなくなる。神経衰弱が近づいた徴候の一つは、自分の仕事は非常に重要であり、休暇をとったりすれば種々の災難をもたらすことになる、と思いこむことである。(『ラッセル幸福論』)
The more tired a man becomes, the more impossible he finds it to stop. One of the symptoms of approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important, and that to take a holiday would bring all kinds of disaster.
