　私は、ペン・クラブ（注：国際ペン・クラブではなく,英国ペン・クラブ）で、「芸術としての歴史」(History as an Art, 1954)と題するハーモン・オールド記念講演を行った。講演終了後、私たち（夫婦）は、ペン・クラブの幹事から夕食に招待され、文学上の好き嫌いについて、思いのままに語って楽しんだ。
　特に私はワーズワースが大嫌いである。彼の作品のいくつかのものは優れていると認めなければならず,事実,賞賛もし,好きでもある。しかし、彼の作品の多くは,非常につまらなく,また耐えられないほど表現が大げさでありくだらない。（相手の幹事にとって）不幸なことに,私は,ワーズワースの詩句の悪い部分を容易に思い出す技術をもっており,ワーズワースを支持する人間はほとんど誰でも困惑させることができる。・・・
　私はシェリーには好感を抱いている。
