    　彼ら（＝決闘を支持した人々）は、現在の戦争支持者が忘れているように、「人間性」と呼ばれるものの大部分は習慣と伝統と教育の結果であり、文明人においては、原始的本能によるものはごくわずかであることを忘れている。もし世界が数世代にわたって戦争のない生活を生きる（暮らす）ことができれば、戦争は、私的決闘が私達にとって不条理に思えるようになったのと同じように思えるようになるであろう。
