対独戦争が終わった時、原爆製造に協力した科学者達は、原爆は既に敗北の瀬戸際にある日本に対して使用すべきではないと考えていた。いずれにせよ、（日本は）ヒトラーのような世界に対して脅威をもたらすようなものではなかった。（あの原爆は戦争を終わらせるために投下されたものではなかった。日本政府はその前に講和を申し出ていた。西欧諸国の政府はそのことを知っていた。）科学者達は、米国政府に対し、公表した後に原爆を無人地域（in a desert）で爆発させること、また、原子力を国際的な権威の手に委ねるべきだと主張した。しかし、米国政府に、いずれも無視され、原爆は投下された。
( When, however, the German war was finished, the great majority of those scientists who had collaborated towards making the A-bomb considered that it should not be used against the Japanese, who were already on the verge of defeat and, in any case, did not constitute such a menace to the world as Hitler. Many of them made urgent representations to the American Government advocating that, instead of using the bomb as a weapon of war, they should, after a public announcement, explode it in a desert, and that future control of nuclear energy should be placed in the hands of an international authority. ... but neither paid any attention. ...)
