Narcissism	ナルシシズム
Narcissism*1 is, in a sense, the converse*2 of an habitual sense of sin; it consists in*3 the habit of admiring oneself and wishing to be admired. Up to a point it is, of course, normal, and not to be deplored*4; it is only in its excesses*5 that it becomes a grave evil. In many women, especially rich Society women,*6 the capacity for feeling love*7 is completely dried up, and is replaced by a powerful desire that all men should love them. When a woman of this kind is sure that a man loves her, she has no further use for him. The same thing occurs, though less frequently, with men.*8 When vanity is carried to this height, there is no genuine interests*9 in any other person, and therefore no real satisfaction to be obtained*10 from love. (From: The Conquest of Happiness, 1930) 【ヒント】まず全文を通読する。何のことが書いてあるか見当がつかなかったら,何べんでも繰返して読んで見る。さて Narcissism も知らない,converse も怪しい。これは困った,とあわてるには及ばない。the habit of admiring oneself and wishing to be admired これははっきり解る。これを手がかりにして後の文を考えて行くと,本文は「うぬぼれ」ということを主題にしている。それがまず女性の場合についてであり,それから男性にも及んでいる,と見当がついて来るに違いない。ここまで下ごしらえが出来てから、単語や熟語や構文を詳しく考えて行くことにする。	【語句】 *1)Narcissism　ギリシア伝説で、水に映った自分の美しさにあこがれて溺死した美青年が Narcissus[na:siss]で,この青年が生れ変わってnarcissus すなわち「水仙の花」になったと言われる。それからnarcissism[na:sisizm]は「自己陶酔」の意味になる。 *2)converse は something that is the exact opposite で「逆」「反対」　用例: 'Hot' is the converse of 'cold'。なお converse には「話し合う」意味もあることを忘れないこと。 *3)consist in「～に存する」　用例: Happiness consist largely in being easily pleased. (幸福は主として容易に満足することにある。) *4)to be deplored「嘆き悲しまるべき」　これは deplorable という形容詞に置きかえられる。 *5)excesses excess[ikses]は「過度」であるが,その事例の意味で an excess とか excesses のように使うことが多い。 *6)Soiety women「社交界の婦人たち」 *7)the oapacity for feeling love は、「他の人に愛をいだく能力」ということ。 *8)with men「男の場合に」　この with は in the case of である。 *9)genuine[denjuin] interests「純真な関心」 *10)to be obtained は obtainable という形容詞に置きかえられる。 【構文】it is only ...that it becomes ... これはいわゆる強意の文で,it は that-clause を代表する仮主語。that all men should love tbem は前の desire の内容を示す名詞節。that a man loves her は is sure に対する目的の役をする名詞節。
【邦訳】 　自己陶酔というものは,ある意味では,常習的な罪悪感の裏返しである。それは自分自身を賛美し,ひとから賛美されることを欲する習慣にあるからだ。もちろんこれは、ある点までは正常であり、決して嘆かわしいことではない。この傾向が重大な禍いとなるのは過度に走った場合だけである。多くの女性、ことに富裕な社交婦人にあっては,他人に愛を感じる能力が完全に涸渇してしまって、その代りにすべての男性が自分を愛すべきだという強い願望が取って代わる。こういう種類の女性は,一たびある男が自分を愛しているのだと確信するに至ると,もはやその男には用がないと者えるのである。これと同じことは,女性の場合ほど頻繁にではないが、男性にも起こる。虚栄心がここまで昂じて来ると,他人に対する純真な関心は全くなくなり、従って愛情から得られるべき真の満足はなくなるのである。
