努力とあきらめ

Resignation,^*1 however, has also its part to play^*2 in the conquest of happiness,^*3 and it is a part no less essential than^*4 that played^*5 by effort. The wise man, though he will not sit down^*6 under preventable^*7 misfortunes, will not waste time and emotion upon such as are unavoidable,^*8 and even such as are in themselves avoidable he will submit to^*9 if the time and labour required to avoid them would interfere with^*10 the pursuit^*11 of some more important object. Many people get into a fret^*12 or a fury^*13 over^*14 every little thing that goes wrong,^*15 and in this way waste a great deal of energy that might be more usefully employed. Even in the pursuit of really important objects it is unwise to become so deeply involved emotionally^*16 that the thought of possible failure^*17 becomes a constant menace^*18 to peace of mind.

【ヒント】
　Resignation という語は高校生は知っておるべき語であるが,かりにこれを知らないとしても、ほかの部分をよく読めば見当がついて来るだろう。避けられない不幸にくよくよして時間と精力を浪費することは愚かである。些細なことに心を労して、有効に使うべき精力を無駄にしてはいけない。大体このような主旨をつかむ。

【語句】
*1 resignation[rezignei∫an]「あきらめ」これには「辞職」の意味もある。動詞は resign [rizain]
*2 has its part to play「演ずべき役割をもっている」,つまり「役に立つところがある」ということ。
*3 conquest of happiness「幸福をかち取ること」
*4 no less ～ than は結局 as much ～ as と同じであるが,前者は消極面から言ったもの。「何々におとらず」の意。
*5 that played は the part which is played と説明出来る。
*6 sit down「手をこまぬいて座している」という気持。
*7 preventable「予防し得る」
*8 unavoidable「避けられない」
*9 sub mit to「甘受する」
*10 interfere with「～に干渉する」「～を邪魔する」
*11 pursuit「追求」
*12 fret「いらだち」
*13 fury「憤激」
*14 over「～をたねに」

s]「絶え間なき脅威」,「何々に対する」は to であることに注意。

【構文】
such as are unavoidable の such は関係代名詞で are の主語が含まれている。even such as are.., のところは語順が逆になっていて,この such は submit to の to の目的語である。required to avoid them は前の time と 1abour を修飾する語。従って would interfere の主語は time and labour である。that might be more usefully employed は,「そんなことをしなければ」という条件が含まれているので Subjunctive にしてあるもの。so deeply... that ...と so ... that の構文に注意。

【邦訳】

・・・。しかしながら,あきらめもまた,幸福の達成にそれなりの役割をもっている。そして努力の果す役割にもおとらぬ重要な役割である。賢明な人は,もちろん防止できる災厄に対して手をこまぬいて座してはいないだろうけれども,避けられないような災難に対しては時間と感情を浪費することはしないだろう。そしてまた,それ自体避け得るような災難であっても,もしそれを避けるために要する時間と努力がもっと重大な目的の追求にさまたげとなるならば,これを甘受するであろう。多くの人々はうまく行かない些細なことにいちいちいらだったり,憤激したりする。そして,そのようなことからもっと有益に使えるはずの精力を大いに浪費してしまう。たとえ本当に重要な目的の追求においてさえ,余り深く感情的にそれにまきこまれて、そのために,あるいは失敗するかも知れないという考えが絶えず心の平和をおびやかすようになっては,決して賢いことではない。
