わたしが最近書いた若干の文献を同封します。その中に「原子科学者会報」(Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists 原子力科学者会報)に寄稿した論文も入っています。その論文では、アメリカのペンタゴン(米国国防総省)と、それからそれと結託している実業家たちの危険性について、その概略を述べてあります。
人々が無力感を感じているとあなたが述べている点に関していえば、それはわたしが1945年以来、この国（英国）で論じつづけてきた点でもあります。まったくあなたのおっしゃるとおりです――人々を無力化しているのは、無頓着さ(松下注： apathy 無関心)ではなく、大きな絶望感なのです。百人委員会(Committee of 100)は、圧倒的に大きな危険に拮抗するだけの抗議方法を一般の人々にもたせることを目的とした大衆の抵抗運動なのです。……おたよりくださいましてありがとうございます。

Dear Mr. Davie, (May 13, 1962)Your letter to me is a most fascinating one, but I should point out to you that I have taken great pains to show the connection between the expenditure on defence and the role of defence in the United States. I have decried the military-industrial complex and in several recent articles have concentrated on this difficulty.
I am enclosing for your interest some recent literature of mine including an article for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists in which I outlined the danger from America's Pentagon and the business men who are in league with it.
As for your suggestion that men feel a sense of futility, that is part of the argument I have been making in this country since 1945. You are quite right, it is not apathy, but a great sense of helplessness which cripples people. The Committee of l00 is a movement of mass resistance the purpose of which is to make available to people a method of protest consonant with the overwhelming danger. . . .
