ある種の宗教教育が自分の子どもたちのためには望ましく感じていますし、彼らは大人になった時に宗教をどう考えるかは自分で決められると思っています（決められるからよいだろうと思っているからです）。

私は、あなたが私に提起されたのと同じような質問をする手紙をアメリカからしばしば受け取ります。
頑迷な社会においては,そういった質問に答えるのはそれほど簡単なことではありません。概して、あなたがたの子供たちは，
学校に行っている間は、
宗教という点では(in the way of religion)，一般に行われている慣行に，それとなく（tacitly）同調するほうがよりよい，と私は考えます。しかし，私は、あなたがたの考え方（見解）を子どもたちに隠しておくべきだとは考えません。男の子にしろ女の子にしろ，成長した時に、両親が宗教のことについて嘘をついていたということがわかれば、子どもたちは，そのことに当然（just）不満を持つだろうと思います。
ある種の宗教教育は必須だとする意見には私は同意しません。私は，あらゆる宗教は、少なくとも部分的には、まったく証拠のないものを信ずることから成り立っていると考えています。そうして、そのような

Dear Mrs Nofer,
... I frequently receive letters from America asking the same questions as you put to me. In a bigoted commumity such questions are not very easy to answer. I think, on the whole, it is better for your children, while in school, to conform tacitly to whatever is generally practised in the way of religion, but I do not consider that you should conceal your own view from them. I think a child has a just grievance if, when he or she grows up, parents are found to have lied about religion. I do not agree that some kind of religious education is essential. I think that all religions consist at least in part of believing things for which there is no evidence and I think that in face of such beliefs loyalty to evidence should be substituted. You may consider that it is bad for a child to have one set of beliefs instilled at home and another at school, but I think the harm done by any other cause is greater.
