情熱的な狂気 passionate madness

彼(作家のJ. コンラッド)は,人間が陥りやすい情熱的な狂気の多様な形態について非常によく自覚しており,この自覚から,彼は,’規律(自制)というものの重要性を深く信じた。彼の物の見方は,ルソーの主張のアンチ・テーゼ(正反対),即ち,「人間は鎖につながれて生まれるが,自由になることができる」であると,恐らく言ってよいだろう。(即ち)人間は自由になることができるが,それは人間の諸衝動を解放することによってでも,きまぐれになやり方によってでもなく,また制御を一切しないといったやり方によってでもなく,気まぐれな本能を支配的な(自分が一番重要だと考える?)目的に従わせることによって人間は自由になることができると,そのように彼は言おうとしたのだ,と私は信じる。

He (J. Conrad) was very conscious of the various forms of passionate madness to which men are prone, and it was this that gave him such a profound belief in the importance of discipline. His point of view, one might perhaps say, was the antithesis of Rousseau’s : ‘Man is born in chains, but he can become free.’ He becomes free, so I believe Conrad would have said, not by letting loose his impulses, not by
being casual and uncontrolled, but by subduing wayward impulse to a dominant purpose.
