自制の効用と害
自制の効用は,列車のブレーキの効用に似ている。誤った方向に進んでいることに気づいたときには役に立つが,方向が正しいときには害になるばかりである。列車はつねにブレーキをかけたまま走るべきだとはだれも主張しないだろうが,それでも,困難な自制をする習慣は,有用な活動にあてるべきエネルギーに対して,きわめてよく似た有害な影響を及ぼす。（出典： ラッセル「自伝」）The use of self-control is like the use of brakes on a train. It is useful when you find yourself going in 'the wrong direction, but merely harmful when the direction is right. No one would maintain that a train ought always to be run with the brakes on, yet the habit of difficult self-control has a very similar injurious effect upon the energies available for useful activity.
