あることが何度かくりかえして起れば、それだけで,人間や動物にまたそれが起るだろうという期待を抱かせる。このようにして，われわれの本能は、太陽がまた昇るだろうということを信じさせるが、その場合われわれは、思いがけなく首をひねられる雛より以上の地位にいるわけではないのかもしれない。それゆえ、われわれは、過去にあった斉一性が未来に関する期待をひき起すという事実と、その期待の妥当性についての疑問がだされときになおその期待を重視するだけの合理的な理由があるかどうかという問題とを、区別しなければならないのである。（出典： ラッセル『意味と真偽性の探求』序論）The mere fact that something has happened a certain number of times causes animals and men to expect that it will happen again. Thus our instincts certainly cause us to believe the sun will rise tomorrow, but we may be in no better a position than the chicken which unexpectedly has its neck wrung. We have therefore to distinguish the fact that past uniformities cause expectations as to the future, from the question whether there is any reasonable ground for giving weight to such expectations after the question of their validity has been raised.
