Fill leisure intelligently

Most people, when they are left free to*1 fill their own time according to their own choice, are at a loss to*2 think of anything sufficiently pleasant to be worth doing. And whatever they decide on, they are troubled*3 by the feeling that something else would have been pleasanter. To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization, and at present very few people have reached this level. Moreover, the exercise of choice*4 is in itself tiresome. Except to people with unusual initiative*5 it is positively*6 agreeable to be told what to do at each hour of the day, provided the orders are not too unpleasant. Most of the idle rich*7 suffer*8 unspeakable boredom as the price of*9 their freedom from drudgery.*10 At times they may find relief*11 by hunting big game*12 in Africa, or by flying round the world, but the number of such sensations is limited, especially after youth is past.*13 Accordingly, the more intelligent rich men work nearly as hard as if they were poor.

*2 are at a loss to「~するのにとまどう」「どうして~していいか分らない」 to の代りに for + 名詞の連語もある。
*3 are troubled「
*4 exercise of choice「
*5 with unusua1 initiative[iniietiv]「特別に率先して事をやりたがる」この with は who have として見ればよい。
*6 positively 「
*7 the idle rich は idle rich people.
*9) as the price of「何々の代償として」
*10 drudgery=hard, unpleasant and uninteresing work「苦しい単調な仕事」「苦役」
*11 relief「
*12 game「
*13 after yonth is past は when thcy are no longer young と書き直せる。

whatever they decide on は譲歩の副詞節。something else would have been pleasanter は,「他の何かを選んだならぱ」の条件がかくされているので would have been と Subjunctive になっている。 Except to people の toをうっかり見落すと agreeable が誰に agreeabie なのか迷い子になる。it is agreeable の it はもちろん次の to be told を代表する。
