Mass hysteria*1 is a phenomenon not confined to human beings*2 ; it may be seen in any gregarious species*3. I once saw a photograph of a large herd of wild elephants*4 in Central Africa seeing an aeroplane*5 for the first time*6, and all in a state of wild collective terror*7. The elephant, at most times*8, is a calm and sagacious*9 beast, but this unprecedented*10 phenomenon of a noisy, unknown animal in the sky*11 had thrown*12 the whole herd completely off its balance. Each separate animal*13 was terrified, and its terror communicated itself to the others*14 causing*15 a vast multiplication of panic*16. As, however, there were no journalists*17 among them, the terror died down*18 when the aeroplane was out of sight*19. (From: To Face Danger without Hysteria ) |
(以下は、神山正治氏によるコメント及び、訳) 【研究】マスコミの発達した今日は,世界の一角にある事件が起こると,たちまち全世界に報道される。そして全世界の人が一斉に興奮のるつぼに投げ込まれる。これがマス・ヒステリアである。ひとりびとりが冷静に考えて判断すればなんでもないようなことのためにさえ，こういう現象が起こる。しかしこれは人間に限ったものでなく,群居生活をする他の動物のあいだにも見られることである。こういう興奮状態が戦争を誘発することをラッセルは言おうとしているのである。 【訳】大衆ヒステリアは，人間だけに限られていない現象である。それはいかなる群居性の種族にも見られるであろう。わたくしはかつて中央アフリカの野生の象の大群が，はじめて飛行機を見て，みな激しい集団的恐慌の状態におちいっている写真をみたことがある。象はたいがいの場合，落ち着いた賢い動物である。しかしこの前古未曽有の,騒々しい未知の空の動物という現象は，群れ全体を完全にあわてさせたのである。すべての象はそれぞれ，みな恐怖にとらえられた。そして一匹一匹の恐怖は他の象に伝わり，ひどく増大した恐慌を引き起こした。しかしながら，彼らのなかにはジャーナリストはいなかったので，その恐怖は飛行機が見えなくなったとき消滅した。 |
