We all know the sort of woman who hates men, though as a man I rejoice that she is less common than she used to be. She proclaims her hatred on public platforms, justifies it on the highest moral ground, and considers it important that men should know of it in order that their intolerable conceit may suffer a blow - which, alas, it seldom does.
The woman-hating man is a very different type from the man-hating woman. He lacks her self-assurance, her ferocity, her lofty ethical fervour. He does not feel that he represents a cause, or, if he does, it is one that was lost before Adam and Eve left Paradise. Aware that he walks amid dreadful perils, he keeps his view to himself and shuns all contact with the alarming sex. But fate lies in waiting for him as implacably as a terrier at a rat hole : at the age of fifty or thereabouts, he falls ill and is efficiently nursed by some brawny and capable sick nurse.
When he is convalescent but still weak, she informs him that she will soon have to leave him but that she cannot imagine how he will get on without her to look after him. He cannot imagine it either; so he marries her, and she lives happily ever after.
Sometimes this type of man writes books ; when he does, they are very fierce and manly. Nietzsche belonged to this category and, as everyone knows, was such a bloodthirsty author that he was accused of having caused the Great War. When he writes about 'Woman' he writes as though whole regiments of that (in his opinion) contemptible sex trembled at his slightest frown. From this every experienced woman decides that in real life he was submissive and terrifled.
There is, however, another type of woman hater, rather more complex; this is the Don Juan type, who is perpetually seeking his ideal in woman, failing to find it, and abandoning the flawed idol as soon as he perceives the flaw. I confess I have little patience with this type.
Why should woman be an ideal to man any more than man to woman? Being an ideal must be dull work, involving daily hypocrisy and the constraint of unnatural behaviour. Your true Don Juan will find his faith in a lady shattered because she has a cold in her head or is not sprightly at breakfast; he never asks himself whether he is guiltless of these soul-shattering crimes.
The Don Juan type, while it believes itself very manly, is really the victim of a mother complex. Children do not know their mother as a rule at all completely - their mothers keep their adult concerns away from the children's notice. Children thus get a conception of a woman wholly devoted to them, having no life apart from them, destitute of that core of egoism without which life is impossible. Even those who like Byron, have mothers who are the exact opposite of all this derive from literature and current sentiment an ideal of motherhood and unconsciously desire of a wife what they have failed to obtain from a mother.
Current sentiment in this has been at fault, though it is less so than it was formerly. The Don Juans of our days are belated dence and cannot proclaim their woes with the self-confidence and gloating tragicality of their predecessors. Some other role is more suited to the modern age - perhaps that of psycho-analyst will be found the best.
