R. Clark's Bertrand Russell and His World, 1981.)

This article is addressed to men only - women are requested not to read it.

Have you, Sir Reader, met a really thoroughgoing feminist? In case you have not, you may do well to fortify yourself against the possibility of such an encounter in the future. The ordinary everyday feminist is content to suggest that men and women should be equals, but the thoroughgoing feminist holds that women should have the position hitherto enjoyed by men and men should have the position hitherto endured by women. Can anything so monstrous be imagined? But the justification offered is still more monstrous: it is revenge.

The first step will be the reform of language. Instead of speaking of 'man and the lower animals' we shall be taught to speak of 'woman and the lower animals'. I had occasion recently to remark on the surprising slowness of pupils in learning, and I wrote: 'The ordinary boy learns his lesson much more slowly than his teacher expects him to do.' The everyday feminist would substitute : 'The ordinary boy or girl learns his or her lesson much more slowly than his or her teacher expects him or her to do.' But the thoroughgoing feminist substitutes: 'The ordinary girl learns her lesson much more slowly than her teacher expects her to do.' In French, if you wish to s peak collectively of a hundred women and one male infant, the 'they' that alludes to them is masculine, as is reasonable; but under the reformed system a collection of a hundred men and one female infant will be feminine.
From language these reformers will pass on to other measures. A man, on marrying, will lose his surname, adopting the maiden name of his wife, which will be that of their children. If, by some accident, a man inherits a fortune, he will be expected to consult female relatives or female lawyers as to its investment on the ground that men, in spite of their high moral qualities, seldom have much head for business.
I stayed once in a country house where there were three very clever young women and several young men. I overheard the former discussing the latter, and they were saying: 'Of course, they haven't much logic or power of reasoning, but they have marvellous intuition.' I doubt whether the young men would have been wholly pleased if I had reported this verdict to them; but in a thorough feminist regime they would have had to pretend that they regarded it as a compliment, for in such a regime men will have to rely for success upon their social charm, which will consist in skilfully persuading women to feel superior. The best way for a young man to get on will be to make a rich marriage, and the best way to make a rich marriage will be to ask for explanations of things so simple that even the richest women will be able to understand them. Other men, watching a young man pretending to be ingenuous, will make cynical comments about how shrewd he can be when he chooses.
It will become generally recognised that men have more interest in detail than women and higher moral standards, but that they are lacking in comprehensiveness and in the power of calm judgement. How, indeed, women will ask, could it be otherwise in view of the length of time they spend on personal adornment?
Meanwhile, fortunately, men escape these humiliations. What does it matter if women suffer them? After all, they are used to them.
